CHP at SPR 2022

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) had a strong presence at the annual Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) meeting in Denver, held April 27th to May 1st, 2022. This was a Hybrid meeting, with a significant number of SPR members returning to the meeting in person for the first time, while remaining members participated virtually. CHP faculty agreed it was great to be back to an “in person” meeting!

CHP’s Dr. Chido Vera, MD, MPH organized and shepherded the “Kickoff” Hybrid Session on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Dr. Vera is the Chair of the SPR Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The session was well-attended and received kudos for content and organization. Dr. Vera also gave an invited PED talk “Putting a Face on Radiology”. Ashok Panigrahy, MD, Professor, Radiologist-in-Chief, and John Caffey Endowed Chair in Pediatric Radiology also moderated a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Session with a keynote speaker while also leading and organizing the CHP group at the meeting.

Judy Squires, MD delivered a well-received invited lecture on Communication in the SPR Non-Interpretive Skills Session. She also served on the expert Panel on Ultrasound Protocols for Pediatric Patients, representing CHP with the significant expertise she brings to the topic as SPR Chair of the CEUS Task Force.

CHP Pediatric Radiology Fellow Anita Baghai Kermani, MD gave an excellent Scientific Presentation “MRI for Pediatric Appendicitis in Patients with Inconclusive Ultrasound Findings: A Single-Center Retrospective Review”, presenting this important scientific paper and answering all questions with expertise and poise. Co-authors for the study include CHP Faculty Drs. Subramanian Subramanian, Judy Squires, and Sameh Tadros.

CHP faculty mentored 4th year medical student, K.C. Oommen, who successfully presented the Scientific Presentation titled “Transvaginal Ultrasound in Adolescent Girls: SPR Membership Survey Results and Review”. Co-aurthors included Judy Squires MD and Serena Chan, MD from CHP, as well as SPR members Drs. Emily Riedesel and Leann Linam .

KUDOS to CHP faculty members Subramanian Subramanian MD and Joan Zawin MD, who were tied winners for the annual SPR Unknown Case Contest. There is only one winner for the annual contest, and our two faculty members tied for the first spot! This is a great honor for UPMC Children’s Hospital at Pittsburgh. Congratulations to both faculty members!
