Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology division faculty perform a full range of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology procedures. Current MR techniques include both structural and functional imaging, together with diffusion and perfusion imaging and spectroscopy. CT angiography with arterial post-processing is routinely used for the non-invasive diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease and is combined with CT perfusion, especially in patients with acute stroke. Our renown head and neck imaging service, embedded in the ENT clinic, provides super-specialized interpretation of studies including MR, CT, and routine PET/CT in head and neck cancer. A dedicated spine intervention service provides expertise in pain management techniques including discography, epidural steroid injections, selective nerve root blocks, disc biopsies and vertebral augmentation.

Since 2008, the fellowship-trained neuroradiology members of our overnight coverage division have provided 24/7 emergency department coverage for neuro MR and CT, meaning that final interpretations are generated immediately by attending radiologists—the first known service of its kind in academic radiology.

The division has an extremely active and funded research program. Current projects include imaging of athletes with concussion syndromes, a study evaluating spinal cord injury patients using newer imaging technologies (DTI) and computerized post-processing, imaging of facial reconstructive surgery,and a series of studies on PET/CT in head and neck oncology.

Neuroradiologists at UPMC are an integral part of the diagnostic and therapeutic teams in several of the nationally ranked departments within the health system, including orthopaedics, radiation oncology, medical oncology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery and neurology. The division is based at UPMC Presbyterian, and faculty also serve the patients at UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Mercy Hospitals.
